Medicare’s New GLP-1 Program Is Here: What Kansas Beneficiaries Should Know

A new Medicare program may lower the cost of certain weight-loss medications—but eligibility is limited.

Seeing “GLP-1 medications for $50” in a headline may sound simple. For Medicare beneficiaries in Wichita and across Kansas, however, the details matter before calling a doctor, changing a prescription, or switching drug plans.

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge began July 1, 2026. This temporary federal program gives eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries access to certain GLP-1 medications used for weight loss or maintaining weight reduction. The program is currently scheduled to continue through December 31, 2027.

Not Everyone With Medicare Will Qualify

Having Medicare or a Part D plan does not automatically make someone eligible.

Qualification depends on several factors, including Medicare drug coverage, medical criteria, how the medication will be used, and whether a GLP-1 drug has already been paid for through the person’s Part D coverage. Medicare provides an online eligibility questionnaire, but a health care provider must determine whether the medication is medically appropriate and complete any required prior authorization.

People receiving a GLP-1 medication through their existing Part D coverage generally continue using that coverage rather than the Bridge program. Certain medical uses, including treatment connected to type 2 diabetes and some other qualifying conditions, may also be handled through regular Part D rules instead.

Understand What the $50 Cost Means

Eligible participants pay a $50 copayment for a 28- or 30-day supply.

Because the Bridge operates separately from regular Medicare Part D coverage, that payment does not count toward the Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket limit. Extra Help cannot reduce the Bridge copayment, and it cannot be spread across several months through the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan.

Do Not Choose a Part D Plan Based on One Medication

The new program does not replace your Medicare drug plan. Your Part D formulary, preferred pharmacies, premiums, deductibles, restrictions, and coverage for every other prescription still matter.

Before changing plans, prepare a complete medication list—including dosage and preferred pharmacy. An individual review can help you compare the full picture rather than making a decision from one headline.
